How long do lash extensions last, and are eyelash extensions worth it? Below, we’re tackling the answer to these key questions, plus sharing some of our top tips for ensuring your eyelash extensions last for as long as possible.

How Long Do Eyelash Extensions Last?

So, eyelash extensions: how long do they last? It’s a question we get all of the time and an important consideration when deciding whether or not to schedule lash extensions

A high-quality, expertly applied set of eyelash extensions should last for six to eight weeks, provided you follow the aftercare tips set out by your technician.

Our natural lashes are shedding constantly, with about 20-30% turnover every couple of weeks, though your natural lash cycle may be faster or slower. When a natural lash sheds, it’s going to take any synthetic lashes it’s adhered to along with it.

Fortunately, while lash extension shedding is normal, it’s also easily fixable with a routine eyelash refill appointment. During that time, your lash stylist will fill in any obvious gaps left behind by natural shedding and make sure your extensions continue to look lush for the full period of time they’re meant to stay on for.

Factors That Impact the Longevity of Lash Extensions

If “How long does eyelash extension(s) last?” is one of our top questions, then the next most common is “How do I get them to last for longer?”

Remember, eyelash shedding is natural, normal, and unavoidable. Even with your very best efforts, you’re likely not going to be able to sustain your lash extensions past eight weeks, and that’s okay! But there are certain things that you can (and should) do to increase the longevity of your set and keep your lashes looking stunning for the full four to six weeks.

  • Makeup and cleansers: Waterproof makeup and oil-based eye products, including cleansers and makeup removers, can both degrade the glue used for eyelash extensions, leading to the weakening of the adhesive and lashes that are quicker to fall out. Make sure to avoid them, and switch to non-waterproof, non-oil-based alternatives as needed.
  • Irritation: Picking, pulling at, or rubbing your eyelash extensions is a recipe for premature shedding. Avoid irritating your lash line whenever possible, and keep in mind that the damage these behaviors cause can result in you having to delay any planned refill appointments.
  • Mascara: Mascara is typically a no-go when you have eyelash extensions, as they can greatly decrease the lifespan of your set. But on the bright side, you won’t need mascara when your lashes are already looking so full.
  • Weather and climate: Any sort of extreme weather conditions can impact your lashes, such as high humidity or very hot or cold temps. Protect your lashes when these conditions are present by wearing sunglasses outside and cleansing your lashes more frequently.
  • Aftercare: Your lash technician will go over exactly what you should and should not be doing to protect your lashes in the hours, days, and weeks after your appointment. Pay close attention to things like how to clean and brush your extensions, and make sure not to let your lashes get wet for at least 24 hours after application. We also recommend using specific lash products, like Lash Me’s very own lash-enhancing serum, created with vitamins and peptides that make lashes last longer.

Need some more advice on lash-safe products to add to your everyday routine? Your stylist will be happy to discuss recommended cleansers, makeup, and sealants and can also help you avoid the products that will do the most damage.

Are Eyelash Extensions Worth It?

Absolutely! Lash extensions are a quick, easy, and cost-efficient way to bring about a total transformation in how you look and feel, emboldening confidence and empowerment, with a very low risk of irritation or side effects. And because they last for weeks, you don’t have to worry about running back and forth to the salon for refills.

If you’re not completely sold on getting extensions, we recommend trying out a lash lift and tint first. They tend to last the same length of time as eyelash extensions (six to eight weeks) with very minimal requirements in terms of aftercare.
